With its many benefits including treating acne, hyperpigmentation, unclogging pores and boosting collagen production, it’s no wonder that tretinoin is such a buzzy skincare ingredient. But what is it, and how can you get your hands on it? WH spoke to dermatologist Dr Elif Benar and Dermatica Consultant Dermatologist Dr Catriona Maybury for the lowdown on the ‘what, why and how’ of this highly effective medication.
‘Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid which is far more powerful than any retinols you can buy over the counter,’ explains Dr Maybury. ‘It increases skin cell turnover, unclogs pores and improves pigmentation by breaking down dead cells, whilst also increasing collagen.’
If you want to try a tretinoin product, it’s best to start with a low dosage such as 0.025% or 0.05%. This will help your skin to get used to the ingredient without irritating it too much. You can then increase the strength of your tretinoin if advised by a dermatologist.
‘It is important to note that when using tretinoin, it can take weeks or even months before you see results. However, it’s worth persevering because the end results are well worth it,’ says Alicia Lartey, a London-based aesthetician.
It’s also recommended that you use a high SPF sunscreen when applying tretinoin, as it can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Also, if you have any underlying skin conditions such as rosacea, it’s best to be careful when introducing new ingredients. tretinoin uk
