Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. It has a maximum depth of 371 feet, deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf, and it is the third-deepest lake in North America. It is located in northwest Montana, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Glacier National Park in the Flathead Valley and flanked by two scenic highways that wind along its curving shoreline.
A visit to Whitefish and the greater Flathead Valley wouldn’t be complete without renting a boat for a day of water-skiing, scenic cruising, tubing or fishing on one of the area’s many lakes & reservoirs. A variety of recreational boats are available from many lake marinas and private suppliers in the surrounding towns. Kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are also popular choices for active adventures on Flathead Lake.
